The DA published their intention to table a 'Referendum Bill' in the government Gazette on 21 June 2021 which would enable the Premier to call provincial referendums in accordance with the South African Constitution.
Since then, however, they have completely betrayed the trust of their voters and the Western Cape people, by making ZERO progress on the legislation.
Democracy delayed is democracy denied.
Dr. Annelie Lotriet is the MP the DA put in charge of the Referendum Bill.

Dear Dr. Annelie Lotriet,
I hope this email finds you well. I write to you as a concerned citizen of the Western Cape, deeply invested in the democratic processes that drive our province and, by extension, our country.
On 21 June 2021, the Democratic Alliance (DA) publicly committed to tabling the 'Referendum Bill'. This critical piece of legislation, with the potential to shape our democratic landscape, promised to grant the Premier the power to call provincial referendums in line with our South African Constitution.
Since this significant announcement, we, the people of the Western Cape, have been waiting for updates, progress, and ultimately, the realization of this commitment. It is now two years on, and we are yet to see any tangible movement in this direction.
We understand the complexities and challenges associated with developing new legislation. However, silence and lack of communication do not foster trust. As the Member of Parliament assigned to shepherd this Bill, your role is pivotal, not only in its formulation and implementation but also in keeping us informed about its status.
We entrusted our faith in the DA, in you, Dr. Lotriet, to make a significant change. This trust now wavers on the edge of betrayal, as we are left in the dark with no information, no progress, and no answers.
It is time for transparency and accountability. We demand to know the current status of the Referendum Bill and the steps being taken to advance it. The people of the Western Cape deserve answers, and we believe it is your responsibility to provide them.
As your constituents, we are fully committed to supporting and participating in the democratic process. We hope that you share the same fervor for democracy and will urgently provide an update on the Referendum Bill.
Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. We look forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
